SUMMARY:2017 LightField Festival of Multimedia Visual Art
DESCRIPTION:LightField’s 2nd Festival of multimedia art presents the work of six distinguished artists. In different ways\, their visual projects look past common perceptions and stereotypes to delve into the real lives of people largely invisible to mainstream culture. These artists are unflinching in their engagement with working-class people of all ethnicities\, who day-to-day face challenges to their humanity and dignity from within and without their communities. \nBy presenting their work in one venue (Hudson Hall)\, with innovative\, multifaceted displays\, Just the Facts asserts the potency of the art’s subject matter\, and also aims to explore how the realism on the artworks’ surface creates lively\, nuanced entry points to broader conversations.\nThose entry points include:\n– the agency of the disenfranchised individual in American society;\n– the prospect of social\, economic\, and political upheavals now dominating secular life;\n– the myth of documentary objectivity;\n– the ways in which globalization and technology have left many individuals and families behind;\n– and the ways in which immigrants have become the focus of insecurity and fear worldwide.

SUMMARY:RESIST
DESCRIPTION:RESIST is an exhibition of responses to the political climate of the United States. Let’s not say the “current” political climate or the “post-election” climate because what is happening now is merely a continuation of what has come before it. Americans (especially those with comfortable lives) tend to suffer from nasty cases of historical amnesia. Is the rise of Donald Trump frightening because it’s truly unexpected\, or because we couldn’t see through the glossy surfaces of our socioeconomic bubbles? \nWe invited artists to show work that deals with the viscerality of politics. Work that eschews pithy or sophomoric commentary for subtlety and depth. Work that acknowledges history and its inextricable relation to the present. Work that recognizes emotion as a valid genesis for politics. \nWe wanted work that seeks and advocates for political solutions heartier and more potent than the ever-nebulous entity of “love.” Work with bark and bite. Work that celebrates bodies on the periphery\, bodies in danger\, bodies that might be deemed insufficiently human in a culture saturated with rightism. \nWe wanted work that questions art as a politically useful mode of production. Work that encourages the viewer to go beyond aesthetics and toward activism. Work that questions itself\, work that implicates the viewer\, work that unsettles the pristine space of art and brings us into the violence and fear of material reality.

SUMMARY:Ulrich Museum of Art
DESCRIPTION:POSTDATE: Photography & Inherited History in India\nTwo generations after the exultation of Independence and the concurrent horrors of Partition\, contemporary Indian photographers reclaim and reappraise the history of colonialism in their country. These artists look closely and critically at historical Indian photography and draw on diverse sources of inspiration. They take matters of history into their own hands\, redefining the iconic historical images of India and investigating the complex relationship between traditions of representation and contemporary image-making. The exhibition will include works by Raqs Media Collective\, Gauri Gill\, Nandan Ghiya\, Vivan Sundaram\, Pushpamala N.\, and Annu Palakunnathu Matthew.

SUMMARY:New York Public Library
DESCRIPTION:This event celebrates the publication of Postdate: Photography and Inherited History in India and the exhibition of the same title\, on view at the San Jose Museum of Art\, California\, this summer and then on national tour. In considering the role of the artist as researcher\, collector\, activist\, and documentarian\, this panel examines the complex relationship between traditions of representation in India and contemporary practices of image-making. The panelists also discuss the challenges for artists who are both committed to located histories in India and an engagement in transnational discourse. \nTwo generations after the exultation of Independence and the concurrent horrors of Partition\, contemporary artists mine the uneasy history of photography in India as a means to challenge outmoded narratives\, share hidden stories\, and make personal connections with tradition. \nTaking history into their own hands\, figures such as Nandan Ghiya\, Gauri Gill\, Jitish Kallat\, Annu Palakunnathu Matthew\, Madhuban Mitra and Manas Bhattacharya\, Pushpamala N.\, Raqs Media Collective\, Vivan Sundaram\, and Surekha draw on a diverse range of sources\, from ethnographic photographs made at the height of the British occupation to hand-painted studio portraits and stills from Bollywood movies. Weighing the influence of the global against the draw of the local\, these artists embrace tradition and innovation as covalent rather than competitive forces. Marking the US debut of several of the featured artists\, Postdate: Photography and Inherited History in India deepens our understanding of the legacy of colonialism and celebrates new and socially engaged modes of image-making in South Asia.

SUMMARY:Royal Ontario Museum
DESCRIPTION:Generations: Annu Palakunnathu Matthew\nThis photo-based exhibition\, featuring the work of contemporary artist Annu Palakunnathu Matthew\, looks at the family photograph in a new way. Viewed by the artist as an object filled with emotional and psychological energy\, the family photograph plays an evocative role in shaping our identities and memories. \nWhat is a family photo? How do they work to shape our memories?  What can they really tell us about history? With a uniquely creative approach\, Matthew not only studies the connection between the past and present\, but also addresses the silences and absences in family photos; where histories do not get preserved\, and memory and fabricated histories become blurred. \nBorn in England\, raised in India\, and now based in the United States\, Matthew’s dynamic and thought-provoking work pulls from her experience of living between three cultures. This exhibit brings together six bodies of work from 1996 to 2015 and consists of still and moving imagery. By playing with technique\, Matthew’s work is also an exploration of the medium of photography itself. The title of the exhibit refers to both the multiple generations within a family and the multiple generations of a photographic print. \nAnnu Palakunnathu Matthew is Professor of Art (Photography) at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston\, Rhode Island.
