SUMMARY:Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2018
DESCRIPTION:In its title\, the Biennale is an invocation of the latent cosmopolitan spirit of the contemporary metropolis\, Kochi\, as well as its mythical past—the ancient port of Muziris\, a centre of trade and cultural exchange that is still an active archaeological site. In spirit\, the Biennale seeks to explore resonances of this past alongside the pluralities of the present in the current global context to posit alternatives to dominant political and cultural discourses. Kochi-Muziris Biennale is an invitation of dialogue for new aesthetics and politics—rooted in its socio-geographical setting\, but receptive to winds blowing in from other worlds. \nThe fourth edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale is curated by eminent artist Anita Dube. Her appointment as curator\, unanimously decided upon by an Artistic Advisory Committee put together by the Kochi Biennale Foundation at the beginning of last year\, stays with the Biennale’s tradition of being an exhibition helmed by an art practitioner.

DESCRIPTION:Annu Palakunnathu Matthew will present her photo-based artwork\, which is a striking blend of still and moving imagery. Her larger work draws on archival photographs as a source of inspiration to examine concepts of memory\, cultural assumptions\, and national identity. DESCRIPTION:Generations: Annu Palakunnathu Matthew\nThis photo-based exhibition\, featuring the work of contemporary artist Annu Palakunnathu Matthew\, looks at the family photograph in a new way. Viewed by the artist as an object filled with emotional and psychological energy\, the family photograph plays an evocative role in shaping our identities and memories. \nWhat is a family photo? How do they work to shape our memories?  What can they really tell us about history? With a uniquely creative approach\, Matthew not only studies the connection between the past and present\, but also addresses the silences and absences in family photos; where histories do not get preserved\, and memory and fabricated histories become blurred. \nBorn in England\, raised in India\, and now based in the United States\, Matthew’s dynamic and thought-provoking work pulls from her experience of living between three cultures. This exhibit brings together six bodies of work from 1996 to 2015 and consists of still and moving imagery. By playing with technique\, Matthew’s work is also an exploration of the medium of photography itself. The title of the exhibit refers to both the multiple generations within a family and the multiple generations of a photographic print. \nAnnu Palakunnathu Matthew is Professor of Art (Photography) at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston\, Rhode Island.
